Feeders

Hummingbird Feeder

Because humming birds associate flowers with food, many hummingbird feeders have flowers engraved in their design. Basic hummingbird food consists simply of sugar and water, which can get sticky and messy at times. Make sure that when you buy a hummingbird feeder it is easy to clean as you will need to do this at least once a week. There are tube-type and tray-type hummingbird feeders and also window-mounted feeders. These are a wonderful way to view hummming birds upclose.

Platform Feeder

Platform feeders offer the widest attraction for birds because larger birds can land and eat from them. Platforms are also very useful as you can put any type of food in them from bread to seed to peanuts. However, a down side of platform feeders is the potential for animals such as squirells to eat the seed.

House Feeder

House feeders are basically platform feeders with walls and a roof. They provide protection against the weather and also help keep the food dry and fresh. Usually a house feeder has a hole in the top which allows you to pour in the food and some have hinged sides to allow easy filling. As with the platform feeders, be prepared for squirells.

Tube Feeder

One of the most popular and inexpensive feeders is the tube feeder. Basically, it is an empty cylinder with a bottom and a number of perches spread along the tube. The tops usually screw off for feeding. If you are new to birding and or on a budget, a tube feeder will provide alot of bang for your buck as it will attract a large number of birds.

Thistle Feeder

This is a specialized tube feeder for thistle -loving birds. As this can be expensive, we tend to use the standard tube feeders unless trying to attract a bird who likes only thistle.

Suet Feeder

Suet is a compressed mixture of berries, grain, corn, peanuts and filler. The feeder is usually squared shaped with a hinged door to allow placing of the suet. Many song birds enjoy suet as it is a source of fat and sugar. Usually, you can buy both suet and feeder together at a reasonable cost. The feeders are very easy to tie to branch limbs with a simple piece of string.

Bird houses

There are many varieties of Bird houses. You can purchase 12 room Purple Marlin houses or single Blue Jay houses. Look for quality construction, and make sure you have easy access for cleaning so as to inhibit growth of molds or fungus. Also, make sure the houses have proper ventilation. If they don't seem to, dont buy the house. Maturing birds can actually die if heat builds up too much within a house. Check out our excellent selection of affordable birdhouses.

Bird baths

If you want to increase your bird population, get a bird bath. Make sure the bath has sturdy construction and allows for sand or rocks to be put in the base to counter-balance it. We advise cleaning your birdbath weekly with a non-toxic cleaner such as a small dab of dish detergent. Baths come heated and unheated. If you get a non-heated bath, be sure to add warm water 2-3 times a day in the winter to prevent freezing. It is a bit of work, but the birds will reward you by returning many times.
