Birdwatching
Birdwatching is one of the country's fastest growing hobbies. It is estimated
that over 50% of North Americans who own a home or have views to a backyard
have some form of feeder or bird house.
Bird watching is an excellent way to bring nature into your own living
room. Binoculars are useful for this activity and there are many types,
ranging from $15.00 to $1,000.00's for advanced combination spotting scopes
and digital cameras. There is a wonderful feeling of satisfaction in going
out in your backyard, filling your feeders, putting up birdhouses and
knowing you are doing your part to help Mother Nature.
This is especially true in the winter when birds have a harder time finding
food. It is a good time to stoke up the fire, grab something good to eat,
get out your bird guide book and binoculars and watch the show. If you
feed your feathered friends in the winter you can be assured that you
will have a large assorment of birdlife in the other seasons. Please remember
that once you start feeding your birds you will need to keep up with it
as after a while the birds will think of your backyard as a dependable
food source and you won't want to let them down.
There are many varieties of food, from bread or grains to sunflower seeds.
Smaller song birds tend to like the grains and medium sized birds such
as cardinals and blue jays like sunflower seeds. Larger birds such as
gulls and crows tend to go for bread.
Your best bet is to offer all three types and don't forget that birds
love berries and fruits also. You will find many options at garden stores,
outdoor living centers and even in supermarkets. If you want to attract
a specific type of bird, search our site or contact a specialty bird shop.
There is nothng more interesting and exciting than seeing your first humming
bird, but it takes a special feeder and special food (nectar) to attract
them. We put the humming bird on our Top Ten list of birds we want to
attract.
Another good food is suet, which is a bar of nuts, berries, sunflower
seeds, and grains. Nearly all birds like suet. Make sure you you buy a
suet holder so that birds can eat all of it. If you put suet into a regular
flat feeder it will get messy very quickly and the big birds will try
to take it away in large pieces, leaving none for your smaller song birds.
Birdbaths are also an excellent way to attract wildlife to your backyard.
This is especially true in the winter when birds have to use up energy
to convert the snow to water. If you do not want to purchase a heated
bird bath, just add warm water to the bath two to three times a day. Be
prepared for the water to freeze overnight so you will have to empty it
and refill in the morning.
