CampingSo you have decided to get the greatest natural feeling you can by camping in the great outdoors? There are a number of key things you must take into account: Your tent. When you choose your tent you want to keep the following things in mind: First is size. If there are four people in your camping party make sure you go for a tent capacity of five to six people. This will allow you to have some elbow room and allow you some extra room for gear. Your tent should also have adequate rain protection. Make sure you buy a tent with the largest rain fly possible. When purchasing a tent look for sealed seams for strength and a tent that is self-expandable, to make first-time setting up easier. Preparing camp. When looking for a campsite you want to focus on the following: Search for level ground with some shade. This will make your whole experience, including sleeping, much better and will help to keep you dry. If the weather looks like it might turn to rain, seek a level spot on higher ground rather than a valley, in order to avoid flash floods. In addition to level ground you should have a water source nearby and you need to prepare your bathroom facility. Food: Carry all food in airtight containers. Food can greatly heighten your camping experience as nothing tastes better then food from the grill. Simple pr-e mixed meals are the best. Do not get too fancy your first time out. Warning: Store food in airtight containers, preferably large metal containers and do not store food in your tent. Water: Bring in your own water unless a public water facility is provided. If you must drink the water on site make sure you boil it - no exceptions. Key things to remember: People get lost! Establish out of bounds areas and enforce them. No one wants to have anyone disappear. Give everyone a whistle. As silly as this may seem, lives have been saved due to a simple whistle. Once you get a few trips under your belt start to learn about orienteering. This is a great learning experience for families and it’s exciting to know all the terrain features on a topographical map. Animals: Avoid them whenever possible. In the wilderness, safely cannot be stressed enough. Make sure no one wanders off in the night alone and seal all food in airtight containers. There are thousands of camping areas. Get out there for a day or for a week. Make sure you are prepared have fun, carry out everything you carry in and be safe.
