CatsIt is doubtful that cats will ever become completely domesticated. Many people think their cats are 'tame' only to find out otherwise when kitty brings in a mouse or squirrel. Humans have attempted to breed cats for specific characteristics for over 2,000. The Cat Fanciers Association recognizes over 50 breeds of cats, now with over 100 variations of the 50 breeds. Cats are rated on twelve different attributes, or perhaps it would be more accurate to call them personality traits. You can rank them on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) Activity levels: Cats with a 10 in this category can be sure to be playful, animated and forever tripping you up as you walk across the house in an attempt to get and keep your attention. A cat with a 1 rating is your typical lap cat that prefers to conserve its energy for the really important things like playing and eating. Affection towards people and the owners: Cats with a high rating will meet you at the door. Most cats rate above a 5 in this category, and one good tip is to get some catnip if you want to buddy up with your cat. Docility: This means the cat's acceptability of being picked up and handled. Most breeds will allow you to pick them up once they get to know you a bit. However, remember that a cat is still at heart a wild animal. Tip. Do not handle raw meat or fish around your cat. They will try to get it and remember, claws are sharp. Also keep in mind that a cat will defend itself if it feels threatened. Vocality: refers to the amount the cat talks or meows. Most cats talk. I have a Siamese who never stops and a Tabby who only talks when she is hungry. Playfulness: This refers to the cat's desire to play with other animals
and its owners. Healthiness: Indicates the breed's longevity, stamina and, strength. Most breeds are very athletic with great jumping and leaping abilities. Affection: Basically this indicates how much of a 'lap cat' you will have. I don't think anyone who has a cat doesn't enjoy the attention received from their furry friends. Need for attention: This describes the breeds overall need for the human touch. Some breeds seem to enjoy being alone while others will be at your feet all the time. Intelligence: refers to the cats ability to think independently. Compatibility with children and animals: This determines how well the cat will blend in with animals and family members already in the house. At your local animal shelter there are many wonderful cats available who can make lifetime friends.
