In earliest history cats were worshipped as gods, or as the messengers of gods. Dogs, on the other hand, have always been known as human companions, hunting beside us, cuddling up to us by the fire, protecting us and doing whatever they can to please us. This has never changed. If you think that you would like to have one of these loyal and useful animals for your companion you are certainly not unusual. There are over 60 million pet dogs in the United States! However, while dog lovers know that all dogs make good pets, it is a good idea to choose the particular breed of dog that will best meet your preference and circumstances.
For instance, small dogs like Jack Russell Terriers (a very popular breed right now) may seem like a good choice if you don't have much room. But think first, Jack Russells, like many small dogs, have excitable nervous systems and have been known to run their humans in circles trying to keep up with them. Some larger dogs, like Basset Hounds, have a calm and laid-back temperament which can make them seem to take up less space than highly strung smaller dogs.
Probably the most popular family pet today is the Labrador Retriever. This is the big old friendly, patient dog that you see in so many pictures, often with a small child hanging around its neck. Due to their size, of course, they eat quite a bit and they like a lot of exercise, but don't forget that word 'retriever' in their name. This dog will run and catch a thrown stick or toy for as long as someone will keep throwing it and they will bring it back and give it to you because that is in their breeding. If you have children and need to find entertainment for both them and your pet, this may be the perfect dog.
Another fairly large dog which has remained high on the list of favorites is the German Shepherd. One of the main reasons for this is that this breed is incredibly smart. For this reason, they have, for a very long time, been known as the perfect guard dogs, seeing eye dogs and police dogs. Shepherds take very well to training, obviously, but their intelligence seems to allow them to figure out situations for themselves. This, and their loyalty, make them alert and reliable family dogs.
Cocker spaniels have traditionally been one of the most popular pet breeds. While they do need exercise, as do all dogs, they can be perfectly content living in an apartment and a small yard is perfect for them. They are friendly and affectionate but are also good watchdogs. Another popular spaniel is the English Springer Spaniel, a somewhat larger dog than the Cocker. The Springer is lively and will need more exercise than the Cocker, but is the perfect companion for hiking or playing ball. Spaniels are easy to train, loyal and eager to please, which make them good family dogs.
If you decide to go with the ever-popular mixed breed, there is usually one predominate breed in the mix. There are over 200 common breeds of dogs, so be sure to do some research first and you will be more likely to make a good canine match for you and your family.
