Environment
We hear the words 'environment' or 'environmental' used in two or three newspaper articles or television shows every day. They have become loaded words, or political words, especially when we hear them used in such phrases as 'environmental movement'.
But your environment simply means the circumstances, objects and conditions which surround you. There are indoor environments and outdoor environments, noisy or quiet ones, crowded or isolated ones, dangerous or safe ones. Every place that you are has its own special environment. It is up to you to create for yourself, to the best of your ability, the kind of environment that you want. Don't forget the word 'circumstances' in the above definition. That means, for instance, if you are surrounded in your office by back- biting, negative feedback and criticism, you might say that it is a hostile environment. Being in an environment like that day after day can take its toll on you in terms of stress-related wear and tear. You might want to do what you can to change that, whether by changing jobs or by learning to tune things out. The same thing goes for outdoor environment. We have all become aware of pollution and how that can cause physical problems. People also find the need to get away to someplace quiet a serene environment. The irony is that the more this is desirable, the more such places become crowded, defeating their very purpose.
It used to be that business and environmental concerns seemed to be opposed but that is changing. Issues such as climate change, clean energy and so-called 'Green Products' such as building materials which are environmentally safe are on the cutting edge of smart business today.
Following is just a partial list of the things which are being studied or implemented today in an effort to improve our environment: auto emissions, solar energy, recycling, land conservation, architecture, medicine, clean air and water standards, oceanography, weather, wildlife, etc. It is to all of our advantage to do what we can to create the kind of environment that gives us the best quality of life.
