Horses

Humans and horses have been companions and co-workers since at least 3000 to 4000 B.C. Cave paintings give us this information. There are whole cultures (such as the American westward expansion and cattle industry) which only were, and are, possible because of the domestication and training of horses. Originally used as pack animals, they were soon trained for warfare when it became evident that slower and less agile animals such as oxen could do the simpler work. Soon horses began to be bred for specific tasks and for certain climates.

There are over 200 breeds of horses today. The most well-known in the United States are Appaloosa, Arabian, Clydesdale, Draft Horse, Morgan, Mustang, Paint, Palomino,Percheron, Pinto, Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walking Horse and Thoroughbred.

It is worth spending a few particular words on the Thoroughbred which has been the star of another whole cultural phenomenon, the world of horse racing. The original Thoroughbreds came from two strains of Arabian horses and a Turkish breed. It is said that three stallions were brought to England around the turn of the 17th Century and all true Thoroughbreds today are descendants of those three horses. Their most important feature was the ability to carry weight over long distances at fast speeds. It was inevitable that this would lead to racing.

In the United States the Jockey Club keeps the official stud book and as of 1986 there were 15,000 listings of foals, or newborn Thoroughbreds. Today racing is a worldwide, multi-million dollar industry.

But many people raise horses with no intention of racing them but just want to have them for their own riding pleasure. Even people without sufficient land to graze them or time to care for them will gladly pay for their pet horse to be boarded at another location. For children there are ponies and miniature horses, whose average height may be anywhere from 28 to 31 inches.

Although they may sometimes be expensive to raise and require a lot of care people who love horses find the expensive and effort worthwhile.
