House PlantsHouse plants are a wonderful, easy and inexpensive way to brighten up any interior, make a simple décor distinctive and freshen up the air in a room. Yet many people think that one has to be born with a special talent in order to raise houseplants successfully. Nothing could be further from the truth. A few simple rules will enable you to create a vibrant, green paradise in your home or office. The most important area, and the one in which most people go wrong, is water. More houseplants die from too much water than too little. Little dabs of water constantly being put on the soil can cause the roots to grow upward in search of the surface water, risking the possibility of them being exposed to the air. On the other hand, if large amounts of water are poured in too often the roots may rot. Plants do not like to sit with wet feet any more than we do! Water plants regularly, we suggest once a week. If you water your plants on the same day each week there is less likelihood of forgetting to do it or doing it too often. Water them thoroughly, until a little water comes out from the bottom of the pot and then – here is the hard part – leave them alone until the next regular watering time. No need to feel the surface – of course the surface feels dry as it is exposed to the air. It is what is going on down underneath that matters. Plants can humanize any office beautifully. We strongly suggest, however, that you ask for a volunteer to be the one person to care for them and then forbid anyone else to touch them. This may seem strong, but office plants are the most vulnerable to too much watering by too many people. It will not be hard to find a volunteer who will love them and enjoy coming to work to care for them. There are plenty of good plant foods on the market, although many successful house-planters do not bother doing this. We suggest finding one which can be dissolved in the water each time – often in amounts as small as ¼ tsp. to a half gallon. Again, this will cut down on the chore of having to keep track of when to do it. A final word – occasionally clean off the leaves of your plants with a soft cloth dipped in water. This will prevent the pores from getting clogged with dust. Plants also enjoy having their leaves sprayed with water from a clean spray bottle. With houseplants, a little effort will produce a great reward!
