Neighborhoods can be defined by their distinctive lawn and garden designs as much as by the style of their houses. What is your preference? Do you like the look of an affluent suburban development where plot lines are indistinguishable as golf course-like turf flows from one yard to another and neat, orderly shrubs grow out of beds of cedar chips? Or do you like the charm of an older neighborhood where small front yards are bordered by picket fences, often with perennials growing up against them, and backyard grass shows signs of wear and tear from the play of kids? Whatever you like, you can find lots of help for giving your plot of land the look that you want.
Even the smallest town today has two or three lawn and garden or home improvement stores, sometimes called “lumber” stores. In slightly larger areas these stores are giants such as Chase Pitkin or Home Depot. Depending on the climate in your area they may start anytime as early as March to display bags of seed, mulch and soil enhancers as well as the latest in motorized equipment to make the work easier. Much of this equipment can be rented.
One of the first things to decide is whether you are going to go “organic” or not. That is, are you going to use chemicals, week killers and pesticides or are you going to go the “natural” route and use alternative ways of managing Mother Nature? The average chain store is likely to offer more in the way of chemicals, but a quick search of ads in your local paper will yield contacts with groups who can help you to avoid these products, if you choose, and still have beautiful, weed and pest free lawns and flower beds. Some of these groups can give you ratings of various stores in terms of the number of organic products they offer. A good idea is to do a little reading on both sides of the question – there are pros and cons on both sides – to determine which way you want to go.
Another thing you will need to decide is whether you are going to water your lawn or whether you can count on the average rainfall in your area to take care of that for you. In most climates there will be some period of time, in the hottest and driest weeks, when your grass and flowers will need some watering. Find out if there are any special ordinances about this in your town. Most of the time there are no restrictions, but if the area is going through a bad dry spell, lawn-watering may be restricted.
But the first thing you need to decide is whether you want to do things as simply, and with the least effort possible, or if you enjoy getting into the care of your property as a enjoyable hobby and therefore worth the work. Either way you can find plenty of folks in your area eager to offer advice.
