OutdoorsWhen you think about the great outdoors what picture comes into your mind? I visualize the beautiful outdoor scenery of the national, historic, and state parks I used to visit as a child. The parks are one of the best ways to become one with nature and enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment. The activities outdoors are nearly limitless. Just to name a few there is the study of nature, picniking, boating, snow sports, camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking and water sports. Did you know in New York alone there 29 National Parks and 168 state parks which cover over 300,00 acres. Within the state parks there are over 1,350 miles of trail which have 8,355 campsites 818 cabins and 18 staffed and interactive nature centers in which the public can view displays about the history and ecology of the outdoor space within the parks. New York has 28 national parks, which cover the state from Fire Island National Seashore in Long Island north to Saratoga National Historic Park and west to The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic site in Buffalo. Every state has parks that are funded by both the federal government and the state. The first National park in the United States was Yellowstone. Yellowstone National Park is located 96 % in Wyoming 3 % in Montana1 % in Idaho. Yellowstone consists of 2,219,789 acres, which covers over 3,472 square miles. That is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The park has vast numbers of wildlife, which include 311 species of birds, 2 species of bear, 18 species of fish and approximately 50 species of mammals. Yellow stone harbors five species which are on the endangered or threatened list. They are the bald eagle, the grizzly bear, the lynx, the whooping crane, and the gray wolf. Whenever you are outdoors always be very cautious and avoid the animals. It is their home we are coming into, not vise versa. One of the great ways to enjoy the outdoors is by volunteering with a local conservation group or one of the state or national parks. Give it a try - it is great exercise, you have a chance to become one with nature and you are helping a great cause. One last thing - whenever you are in the outdoors be sure to carry out everything that you carry in, any fishing gear, camping supplies or other recreational equipment must be taken with you. Remember above all, have a safe and fun time.
