Photography

The earliest examples of photography date from the mid-1800’s. Earliest forms of photography known to the public were called “daguerreotypes.” A special viewer was needed in order to see the picture and there was no way to make copies. In spite of this, daguerreotypes were extremely popular and the public interest in photography had begun. In just two years there were nearly 150 photography establishments. The interest has never stopped. Today it is almost impossible to us to imagine that we would be unable to record family occasions and news events for posterity.

Innovations in photography have included the invention of the Polaroid Land Camera in the 1940’s, color film, the 35 millimeter camera which led to the infamous slide shows of our friends’ travels, the disposable camera and latest, the digital camera which allows the amateur photographer to view exactly what a picture will look like before it is taken and to send pictures out via computer. “Point and Shoot” cameras which make their own internal adjustments for light and focus have made it possible for anyone to take good pictures without a lot of training. At the same time, photography continues to become recognized as a legitimate art form.

If you, like most people, are interested primarily in preserving precious moments on film for the future, two pieces of advice: 1) Consider investing in one of the new cameras mentioned above that make adjustments for you. Having said that, today almost any simple and inexpensive camera (including a disposable one) can give you a picture to cherish for a lifetime. 2) When you see the picture you want, click right away. You can always take a second picture if you want to make it more artistic, but don’t miss the important moment by worrying about picture quality. Do a little experimenting to find out what type of film and processing you like best.

If you are considering investing in a digital camera, first do some research. There are numerous web sites (some of them touting one particular brand and others comparing brands) which can give you useful information. But one of the easiest ways to do research is to ask people you know who are using them for advice. You will find that people love to talk about their digital cameras and the fun they are having with them.

Finally, if you become interested in photography as a hobby or as art, or if you are stymied by the latest technology, look for a photography course for beginners at a local community college or other educational site. These courses are even offered at some photography stores.

Remember, you may regret the pictures you missed, but you will never regret the ones you caught!
