History of OlympicsSports There may be nothing more amazing or beautiful than watching a highly talented athlete making a shot or goal. The history of organized sports goes back to the first Olympic games, which took place in 776BC on the plains of Olympia. Olympia is in the western Greece in Peloponnesus, also called Pelops. The Olympics have continued for close to 12 centuries. The Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympics because there were pagan religious ceremonies to the gods that took place during the games. Some of the sports which have been in the Olympics that you might not
know about are the tug of war, which took place in 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated
Games), 1908, 1912 and 1920. Polo was played in the 1900, 1908, 1920,
1924 and 1936 games and the sport of rugby in 1908, 1920 and 1924. Even
golf was in the program for a few games in 1900 and 1904. To date there have been over 100,000 thousand people competing as Olympians.
In ancient times, as today, Olympic athletes were revered. Ancient athletes
were taken care of for the rest of their lives either by local people
or by the government. Olympians from the USA are not allowed to receive
compensation prior to competing. In countries such as China a gold medal
will get Olympians a new house for their families and a monthly stipend
for the rest of their lives. There is a concern around the world that
Olympic sports are becoming commercialized due to these types of payments. Soccer is the most popular sport in Europe, with lifetime loyalties developed
for the local teams. With the introduction of players like Michael Jordan
and the Shaq, basketball is quickly becoming one of America’s favorite
sports. Baseball is perhaps the most loved of all sports, with owners
paying multi million salary figures to attract the best players.
